SYRIA’S CIVIL WAR COULD LAST ABOUT AS LONG AS DID THE LEBANON CIVIL WAR, NAMELY 15 YEARS

US AND RUSSIA BACK UN SEC COUNCIL RESOLUTION FOR SYRIAN PEACE PROCESS

The UN Security Council approved a resolution calling for a cease-fire and political talks starting next month for ending the civil war in SYRIA. Adopted unanimously, it was the first time Russia and the US have agreed on the political road to a peace process. No mention was made of whether BASHAR ASSAD may run for office in new elections to be held in the next 18 months. One of the obstacles still remaining is determining which of the SYRIAN rebel groups would take part in the peace talks, and which would agree to come to the table without a guarantee of ASSAD’S exit. For now, he appears to be firmly in power.

Despite deepening US-RUSSIAN collaboration on the SYRIA issue, the prospects of an end to the war are fairly dim.  Even if the two powers can agree on which opposition groups count as terrorist and so must be excluded from the peace talks, there is no end in sight for the war on ISIS and AL QAEDA’S NUSRA FRONT.

WAS RUSSIA’S INTERVENTION IN SYRIA A COORDINATED MOVE WITH THE USA AND ISRAEL RIGHT FROM THE BEGINNING?

All actions and recent developments regarding SYRIA, IS and TURKEY indicated that the entire process was a carefully orchestrated geostrategic move between the two super powers. To recap, prior to RUSSIA’S airstrikes in SYRIA, PUTIN held a face to face meeting with OBAMA, shortly afterwards RUSSIAN diplomates held meetings with their ISRAELI counterparts, in order to coordinate RUSSIA’S moves in SYRIA. (On a side note: ISRAEL has about 1.8 million RUSSIAN immigrants)

As soon as RUSSIA started striking SYRIAN rebel forces and IS, it adapted the winning formula of PSY – OPS demonstrated by the USA during the first GULF WAR. This time around it used the RUSSIAN CNN equivalent RT (Russian TV) as its propaganda tool to showcase every military move the RUSSIAN AIR FORCE did in SYRIA. RT reporters – CNN style, showcased RUSSIAN air force equipment in close up, adapting the “imbedded” reporter principle that has proven so useful for BRITISH and US forces PSY – OPS in the second Gulf War.

Furthermore RT suddenly changed its anti - AMERICAN stance regarding US involvement in SYRIA to that of close support. RT in recent days reported positive on US strikes against IS and Rebel targets. Also gone are the accusations against the USA for apparently not bombing huge columns of oil trucks transferring SYRIAN IS oil to TURKEY.

Thus the recent demonstrated unity between the USA and RUSSIA comes at no big surprise.  The big question however is, what is the reason behind this sudden change in attitude on both sides?
