Eitam and Na’ama Henkin, a couple in their 30s, were killed Thursday evening, Oct. 1, when their car was sprayed with bullets as it passed through the West Bank village of Beit Fourik between Itamar and Alon Moreh. Their four young children, who were also in the vehicle, were slightly wounded. The family was from Neria. Security forces and civilian responders came under heavy Palestinian fire when they tried to reach the car and rescue the children, aged 4 months, 4, 7, and 9. Fire was returned and continued for some time.
The attack was a drive-by shooting and the gunmen are believed to have escaped to the Palestinian town of Nablus.
DEBKAfile’s military sources report that he crime was committed by a Palestinian team of two terrorists, one armed with an M-16 automatic rifle, the other with a pistol. They directed a hail of bullets to pentrate the Israeli family car’s windscreen. The two parents were both killed. This attack was deliberately planned. The gunmen waited for the car to slow down just before a curve in the road before they opened fire. They had also prepared their getaway route.
Large army contingents have streamed to the vicinity of the attack, both to search for the killers and to thwart revenge attacks against Palestinians. Drones are hovering overhead.
No Palestinian terrorist organization has taken responsibility for the attack.
